Control and Deviance

Today I had an interesting conversation with Joel and it is pretty interesting to note that he is starting to feel the way I felt in the past. Haha.. He was questioning on the things that he cannot do and why can't he do it? He used an example of smoking and pointed out on how various social institutions polices 'good behaviour' to be with not smoking. Social institutions such as religion, family, school and even peer interaction groups.

Yes.. Our life is very much controlled by the environment that we are in. The social setting that we grew up in. The things that we experience in life. There are also social rules that we learn everyday and these rules are often policed by the state and other institution in the society.

Once we are not playing the game well, we will be considered deviant and there is a social stigma attached to it. It will be up to an individual to choose his path and what he want to do to his life. No one else can decide for him except himself. =D

Joel, live by your faith to find the answer to all these. Confide in the Lord. =D

2 wrongs doesn't make 1 right

Perhaps this is often used but in application, it may not be as easy as it may be. Today is Street Games and the rules of the game was to have only 7 players and it was alleged that one of the teams field 8 players. Accordingly they were suppose to be disqualified and as the other teams were unhappy about it, they complained to the organisers and feedback about this to me.

Well.. To me, I don't really see a big issue with that as I feel that in sports, winning is not everything. But the element of sportsmanship and spirit. 3 teams wanted to boycott the games as they felt that the other team did not have integrity. In my opinion, it is not a good solution as boycotting the game just make things worse and it just make things easier for the other team with lesser teams to compete. When the other team does not have integrity, it is about getting it back by winning them on the court and not by walking off. Just like the Singapore-Thailand match that we watched at National Stadium last year, Thailand walked off the field as they were unhappy with the referee's call. That is not sportmanship and many of the football fans watched in disgust. If that is the case, why is it that when it is happening to ourselves, we are supportive of it?

Haha.. Cause to comment is easier than to do it ourselves. So lesson for today is that, if your opponent cheated, take them on the battle ground and not leaving it totally. Don't expect everyone to be perfect cause everyone ain't perfect.

Happy holidays!

Life of a Student Part 12

This sem seems to pass so fast. It is already the 4th week of the sem and very soon it will be the due date of one of my assignment and then mid sem break then another project due and then starting to prepare for exams le..

This week is CNY and it will be filled with activities and next weekend will also be the same with house visiting and such. The following week will be the submission of a sociology assignment and then IFG Finale for 6 sports all together. Mid sem break will start on that weekend and street games is on monday and the week is sort of going to be a week to do project. Then it will be CA for my LSM1304 on Tuesday when school start and friday is the submission for the project. The weekend of that week will be lunch with my family and the following weekend will be NUS Open House.. Man.. That will be the 8th week of school with 5 more week before exams and I am still doing so many things.. Haha..

I think the next few weeks will be very hectic so the only way to get my readings and tutorials done will be to squeeze every single free time that I have to do them.

Hope that your schedule is not as packed as mine.. Lol..
