Control and Deviance

Today I had an interesting conversation with Joel and it is pretty interesting to note that he is starting to feel the way I felt in the past. Haha.. He was questioning on the things that he cannot do and why can't he do it? He used an example of smoking and pointed out on how various social institutions polices 'good behaviour' to be with not smoking. Social institutions such as religion, family, school and even peer interaction groups.

Yes.. Our life is very much controlled by the environment that we are in. The social setting that we grew up in. The things that we experience in life. There are also social rules that we learn everyday and these rules are often policed by the state and other institution in the society.

Once we are not playing the game well, we will be considered deviant and there is a social stigma attached to it. It will be up to an individual to choose his path and what he want to do to his life. No one else can decide for him except himself. =D

Joel, live by your faith to find the answer to all these. Confide in the Lord. =D
